UNIFIL: The leaders meet to make the point of the situation

The Force Commanders' Conference took place today at the UNIFIL mission headquarters. Activity aimed at allowing mutual operational updates of the various UN missions located in the delicate Middle Eastern region.

The conference, coordinated by the UNIFIL command, saw the participation of heads of mission / force commanders, senior civil and military representatives of UNDOF (United Nations Disengagement Observer Force located between Syria and Israel), of UNTSO (United Nations Truce Supervision Organization deployed at Jerusalem) and UNFICYP (United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus).

The UNIFIL commander, divisional general Paolo Serra, underlined, even in the particular moment of tension in the Middle East, his convinced determination to continue implementing the 1701 resolution, which defined the mandate and tasks of the UNIFIL mission aimed at guaranteeing maintaining the ceasefire in southern Lebanon after the 2006 conflict, assisting the Lebanese armed forces and supporting the civilian population.

The UNIFIL mission currently consists of about 12.000 military personnel from 37 Nations and about 1000 civilian employees, including local 700 and international 300. The data supplied also includes the strong naval component of 7 ships and of about 1000 sailors, constituting the Maritime Task Force operating along the Lebanese coasts and the ITALAIR Task Force composed of 6 helicopters.
