(To UNIFIL)

“A further step forward was taken today towards the definitive stabilization of the area”. These are the words of Major General Luciano Portolano, head of mission and force commander of UNIFIL, on the occasion of the demarcation works of the Blue Line, the armistice line that separates Lebanon from Israel.

"The process of demarcation of blue line  continues and represents an important element of the confidence building mechanism, the result of a constant activity of mediation and negotiation of UNIFIL with both parties ".

The visualization on the ground of the Blue Line, through the agreed placement of the pillars Blue Barrels, constitutes the "indispensable tool to monitor the cessation of hostilities, to prevent accidents and avoid unnecessary misunderstandings and frictions", added the general who underlined how "the implementation and implementation of the 1701 Resolution is achieved through full compliance with said line, both on the Lebanese and on the Israeli side ".

Long about 120 kilometers, the Blue Line coincides with the line of withdrawal of Israeli troops from South Lebanon in May of 2000. Currently it is materialized with 237 pillars against the theoretically necessary 528.
