Many issues emerged during the bilateral talks attended by Minister Pinotti, who today met the Prime Minister, Habib Essid in Tunis, and co-chaired the XVII Italian-Tunisian mixed military commission with Minister Horchani.

During the meetings, Minister Pinotti stressed the closeness between the two countries and, overcoming the sphere of bilateral relations, highlighted that Tunisia is a privileged partner of the European Union, determined to support its democratic consolidation.

In this perspective, the contents of the document prepared by the XVII commission are inserted, which outlines what the relations between Italy and Tunisia will be, in the field of defense, for 2016.

The commission has identified forty-two activities, most of which will take place in Italy, united by a priority objective: to contribute to the stabilization and pacification of North Africa and the Mediterranean area.

Among the various initiatives, there is, for example, the training of Tunisian personnel to strengthen surveillance capabilities and the safeguarding of security in the air-sea and border areas.

With a view to strengthening bilateral relations, the cooperation plan also includes discussions between experts from the various armed forces in the health sector, synergies with the Army, exercises and training in the Aeronautics sector and training activities for Tunisian personnel in the Academies and others. Minister Pinotti also went to Tunisia last June to take part in the extraordinary "5 + 5" session - an initiative in which Italy and Tunisia participate and which brings together 5 European countries (Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Malta) and 5 African countries (Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania and Tunisia) bordering the Mediterranean - to discuss the strategies to be adopted to combat terrorism and provide concrete initiatives and responses in response to existing threats.
