Nepal earthquake: Italian hospital field party

The health assistance and technical-operational support task force sent by the Italian government to assist the population of Nepal affected by the dramatic earthquake of the 767 in April has left today, aboard a KC25 transport aircraft of the Air Force. .

The team, coordinated by the Civil Protection Department within the European Civil Protection Mechanism, is composed of 36 people including medical staff from the Emergency Surgery Group of Pisa, firefighters specialists in assessing and securing buildings and officials of the Department itself.

Also on board the aircraft are the Italian Army of the Celio military hospital, officials of the Crisis Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to integrate the team already operating in Nepal from the 27 April for the organization of the repatriation of our compatriots, and Interforces Command.

The Boeing of the Italian Air Force - took off from Pratica di Mare and will land in the early hours of tomorrow morning in Kathmandu - carries an Advanced Medical Post (PMA) consisting of five tents, a gazebo for triage and service areas for staff , technical intervention material and a container containing twelve blinds.

In particular, the PMA includes an area for the stabilization of the wounded and the emergency room, waiting stretchers, equipment for X-rays and ultrasound, orthopedic treatment advice, operating room and a waiting area for the transfer of patients to other hospitals. .

The health team - belonging to the Group of Urgent Surgery of Pisa - is made up of emergency physicians, surgeons, anesthetists, orthopedists and paediatricians.

The task force will be reunited with the Italian experts arrived in Nepal on Monday 27 April that these days have worked with the United Nations and local authorities to prepare the arrival of technical and health teams and provide the best possible support to the populations.

In Kathmandu, a team of European experts arrived in the morning, including a structural engineer from the Civil Protection Department, sent by the Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection of the European Commission to support the local authorities in the assessment of damage and structures heavily damaged by the earthquake.
