Somalia: MEPs visit the military in Mogadishu

A commission made up of six MEPs for security and defense met the staff of the mission's multinational contingent European Union Training Mission (EUTM) in Somalia.

Welcomed at the headquarters in Mogadishu by the mission force commander, Brigadier General of the Army Fulvio Poli, the members of the commission met the men and women of the Force Protection Unit (FPU) and visited the premises of the field hospital, where the multinational team of doctors and nurses showed the diagnostic and surgical potential available to the mission.

During the second day of their stay in Somali territory, the delegation visited the training center of the National Army, where EUTM-S instructors train Somali soldiers through theoretical and practical lessons in weapon handling, topography, and the discovery of improvised explosive devices (C-IED), fighting in population centres, company e platoon leaders, just to mention the most recent.

The visit to Somalia for the president of the European Commission for Defense and Security (SEDE), Nathalie Loiseau and for MEPs Arnaud Danjean, Lars Patrick Berg, Lukas Mandl, Attila Kovacs and Petras Austrevicius, represented an important occasion to meet the commander of EUTM-S, the representatives of the parliament of the Federal Republic of Somalia (FGS) and the members of the commission of internal affairs e National security.

Defense and security from a European point of view and the interconnection between the Somali and European parliaments were the main topics discussed during the meetings.

The MEPs confirmed the importance of the European missions in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing the strategic contribution provided by EUTM especially in the training of new officers of the local Security Forces.
