First meeting on Down syndrome in Kosovo

20/05/14

Speaking of Down syndrome, in a country like Kosovo where mental distress and physical illness are still a stigma for those who are afflicted with it, is not a simple undertaking.

The first to try to hide the existence of any problems of this type are the families of disabled children, who often abandon them and leave the world of volunteering with the responsibility of caring for them, or keep them at home for fear of the judgment of the society.

There are many NGOs in the Balkans that are forced to fight every day to build a new mentality.

To have more strength and be able to organize a moment of reflection with families and teachers, some of these organizations - the "Center for Independent Living" in the city of Vitomirica and the Pec "One to One" center, asked Cimic for help Italian contingent of Kfor.

It was thus possible to hold a national conference on Down syndrome in Kosovo for the first time in the country's history, which was held in the council chamber of the Pec municipality.

The event was attended by the president of the "Down Syndrome Foundation" Sandro Morassut and Sergio Silvestre, president of "Coordown".

The latter is an organization that coordinates 78 associations and well-known Italian educationalists who, during the conference, were able to answer the questions of families about disability.

The work began with Colonel Antonio Sgobba, commander of the Italian military contingent stationed at Pec. "Down children have the same opportunity as everyone else to be happy and mothers-to-be must be aware of this and, in turn, be happy," is the beautiful message conveyed thanks to a video that is going around the world and that it was made precisely by "Coordown" to answer the doubts of every future mother who learns to wait for a child who is a carrier of the syndrome.
