Operation Irini: welcome to the Greek ship Spetsai

The Greek Navy ship Spetses today joined the EUNAVFOR MED Irini Operation. Spetses is a MEKO200HN class frigate and embarks a team for boarding merchant ships and a Sikorsky S-70B helicopter Aegean hawk. The ship will patrol the area of ​​operation in the central Mediterranean, together with the three planes, already made available by Germany, Luxembourg and Poland.

About twenty countries of the European Union have joined, with men or means, the Irini mission, which can also count on the support of satellite images provided by the Satellite Center of the European Union (SatCen).

“I thank Greece and the other countries of the European Union who contribute with men and means to the Operation - says the Operation Commander, Admiral Fabio Agostini - Although the mission was born recently, it has already given its first results both as regards the collection of information on arms trafficking, which have been shared with the UN Panel of Expert, and for the deterrent effect it has shown against oil smuggling ".
