Margottini ship in the NATO Standing Naval Forces device

​On September 10, 2023, after participating, together with Nave Cavour, Ship Bergamini and to the Submarine Gazzana, at the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the battleship Roma, Ship Margottini, second FREMM in ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) version, has become part of one of the NATO devices operating in the Mediterranean: the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2).

In this context the unit will initially operate within the operation Noble Shield, under the tactical command of Royal Navy Rear Admiral Paul Stroude, and will subsequently provide its support to the operation Sea Guardian (OSG), monitoring the maritime communication lines and contributing to maintaining, in the strategic area of ​​the central-eastern Mediterranean, the necessary level of maritime security as well as a credible and effective deterrent capacity.

In addition to carrying out its task of presence and surveillance, the unit will have the opportunity to interact and operate with the various navies of allied countries, in the context of a vast joint training activity in the various sectors of underwater, air and surface defence.

The ship's crew Carlo Margottini, under the command of frigate commander Claudia Di Paolo, is made up of 173 women and men.

To carry out its mission, the unit will rely on the support of an SH 101 helicopter, in ASW configuration, from the third helicopter group of Catania and a security team from the marine brigade Saint Mark.
