Libeccio ship in Djibouti in the heart of Operation Atalanta

23/06/15

Nave Libeccio entered the Atalanta operation. During a reconnaissance flight of their helicopter two typical local boats (fishing dhows) apparently dedicated to fishing were observed.

These vessels sometimes conceal illicit activities or support for piracy, therefore more careful checks have been carried out by embarking on staff (specialists of the Marina San Marco Brigade, the Underwater Operating Group and a defense and coverage support team).

During the verification, the Italian staff was assisted by a cultural mediator of the Coast Guard gibutin, boarded on Libeccio ship as a further contribution to the operational capabilities of the ship.

From the checks carried out it was possible to ascertain that the crews of the two vessels were exclusively intent on local fishing, so the distribution of fresh water, supplies and information material to combat piracy, thus helping to establish friendly relations (confidence building) with local populations, increase the consensus of the maritime community and the local population towards the European Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) to which Italy participates with Libeccio ship and its crew.
