The evaluation and certification of the environmental impact of the United Nations compound ended this week at the “Millevoi” base of the Italian contingent in Lebanon.

A team of experts from theEnvironmental Management Unit of the United Nations, spent several days in the UNP 2-3 base, headquarters of the command of Joint Task Force-Lebanon and under the command of Brigadier General Francesco Olla, estimating energy consumption and analyzing the waste sorting and disposal system of a complex that hosts nearly a thousand soldiers from more than ten nations.

The installation of photovoltaic panels and the replacement of lighting systems with the most recent low energy consumption have allowed 35% fuel savings in the last period, together with a more accurate management of water resources which is essential in the summer period.

The United Nations team, in addition to the efforts of the Italian contingent in the logistic and infrastructural management of the base, wanted to congratulate them for their strong adherence to the "Green the Blue" campaign to raise awareness of the environment around the world aimed at respecting the environment . The "Millevoi" base is the only one to have obtained, along with that of the Finnish-Irish contingent, this recognition, demonstrating the sensitivity of the peacekeepers Italians for environmental protection.

Brigadier General Francesco Olla, at the end of the ceremony and together with the team president, planted a cedar tree in the main square of the base, a symbol of Lebanon and a characteristic element of its flag. The Italian military, currently employed in the South of Lebanon with the operation "Leonte XXII", make up the second largest contingent of UNIFIL blue helmets, the United Nations mission aimed at ensuring the "ceasefire" in the border areas with Israel following the 2006 conflict.
