Lebanon: World Blood Donation Day, Italian soldiers donate blood to the Lebanese people

Today, on the occasion of the World Blood Donation Day, the Italian military provided their contribution to the "Millevoi" base to help the local population in the Ramadan period.

The Italian contingent, at the helm of Brigadier General Francesco Olla, responded to the request of the Lebanese Red Cross to meet the need to maintain unchanged the blood bank reserves of the hospitals of South Lebanon which, in the period of Ramadan, suffer of an important deficiency due to the impossibility of Muslim believers to eat and drink during the day.

General Olla expressed his satisfaction with the massive participation of the Italian military and of UNIFIL's international contingent of the initiative. The activity also saw the participation of the UNIFIL Commander, the Irish Army General Michael Beary, who gave his contribution along with the blue helmets under his control.

Il World Blood Donation Day It has been promoted for over ten years by the United Nations with the 58.13 resolution of the World Health Assembly. In this context, the Italian soldiers employed as peacekeepers in the south of Lebanon, with their voluntary support to the local population, gave further substance to the UN Security Council Resolution n.1701.
