Lebanon: Sector West, Green Zone exercise

As part of the mission to Lebanon, the "Green Zone" exercise was held at the end of December 2019, organized by the Joint Task Force Lebanon Sector West, currently constituted on the basis of the Granatieri di Sardegna brigade.

The purpose of the activity, which took place inside the UNP 2-3 base in Shama, was to test the ability to manage an environmental problem such as the leakage of contaminated liquid in an area of ​​the base.

During the simulation, the operators of the combat service support battalion they have restricted and prohibited access to the area affected by the contamination. Subsequently the military of theInfrastructure Management Center they blocked the dispersion of the liquid and at the same time sought and repaired the failure that had originated the leakage of the contaminating material. Following this, a specialized team of the CBRN component sampled and monitored the area, decontaminated vehicles, materials and personnel and made the area safe, putting an end to the emergency.

The training event was followed by a delegation of observers belonging to the EMU (Environmental Management Unit), a unit of UNIFIL responsible for checking the effectiveness of the procedures to be adopted in the event of environmental emergencies.
