Lebanon: meeting with religious leaders

10/06/15

The UNIFIL base of Shama held yesterday the interreligious meeting aimed at improving the knowledge and the consolidation of the relations of dialogue and collaboration with the spiritual leaders present in the Sector West area of operations.

The event was organized by the commander of Sector West and the Italian contingent, Brigadier General Salvatore Cuoci. In Lebanon, in fact, there are many religious confessions in 18.

General Cuoci met the Shiite mufti, Hassan Abdullah, the Sunni mufti, Medrar Al Habbal, the Greek Catholic archbishop, Michael Antoine Nakhle Abras, and the Maronite archbishop, Nabil El Hage, in a serene and cordial atmosphere that allowed to address various topics of direct interest to the local population.

Appreciation and gratitude have been addressed to the UNIFIL military, and in particular to the Italian military, for the contribution provided for the maintenance of stability and security in the area of operations. The period of stability that is experienced in this part of the country is one of the longest we remember in its recent history.

The meeting was also attended by the military chaplain of Shama's base, Father Michi, to further confirm the inter-confessional spirit of the meeting, which ended with a moment of reflection and a promise to meet again in the months to come: a message of peace from the Italian contingent headquarters to the whole area south of the Litani river.
