Lebanon: The president of the Senate visits the Italian military

The President of the Senate, Pietro Grasso, visited the Italian military personnel employed in Lebanon on the occasion of the Christmas holidays. Received at the helipad of the UNIFIL command in Naquora by division general Luciano Portolano, head of mission and commander of the force, the president of the Senate was updated on the main political, operational and logistical aspects of the mission.

In particular, General Portolano emphasized the peculiarity of his role: "the commander of UNIFIL is not only the military commander but also has political responsibilities as a representative of the UN secretary general at both Lebanese and Israeli institutional offices for the topics relating to compliance with the 1701 Resolution ".

He was subsequently welcomed at the SHAMA base by the commander of the West Sector and commander of the Italian contingent in Lebanon, Brigadier General Stefano Del Col. The General himself provided an update on the situation in the area of ​​his responsibility, with particular reference to what concerns the control of the territory, the training activities carried out in favor of the Lebanese army and assistance to the local population.

In meeting the staff of the national contingent, President Grasso expressed, on behalf of parliament, words of esteem and appreciation for the work done by the blue helmets and best wishes for the upcoming holidays.
