23/08/14

The Minister of Defense of the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Bratislav GASIC, met today with the UNIFIL Force Commander and Head of Mission, division general Luciano Portolano.

During the meeting, the general provided an update of the operational framework, illustrating the multiple daily activities conducted by the blue helmets in full compliance with the mandate contained in the UN Security Council's 1701 resolution. Resolution that legitimizes the presence of UNIFIL in this portion of the territory by precarious balances but permanently guaranteed by the presence of the 38 Nations contributing to the mission.

In particular, the gen. Portolano underlined the strategic importance of the tripartite meeting, the only moment of confrontation between Lebanon and Israel during which UNIFIL plays, in complete transparency and absolute impartiality, the delicate role of mediator and trait d'union between two countries which, in fact , they have no diplomatic relations.

During the meeting the Minister expressed words of appreciation for the meritorious work carried out by the civil and military personnel of the UNIFIL mission in the context of the delicate historical moment, highlighting the high profile of the mission.

Currently, the Republic of Serbia participates in the mission with approximately 140 soldiers employed in the Eastern Sector of the Operation Area of UNIFIL.
