Lebanon: the Italian contingent meets the women elected in the Lebanese municipalities

The Italian contingent in Lebanon has organized a meeting with Lebanese women elected on the occasion of the votes recently held for the renewal of the country's municipalities.

The work was opened by the commander of the Sector West who underlined the centrality of the role of women in the institutional representative and decisional spheres of the country and called for an active participation of the newly elected at the local level, through the construction of a strategy based on collaboration with the Sector West of UNIFIL and the institutional and non-governmental interlocutors present in southern Lebanon.

During the meeting, coordinated by the officials of the Civil Affairs di Sector West, a representative of LEAP (Lebanese Electoral Assistance Project) analyzed electoral data on gender representation in the country, focusing on the increase in percentages reached in southern Lebanon compared to previous years.

The role of women in the choices to be made for the development of the territory was instead the theme of the reflection proposed by Dr. Halima Kaakour, moderator of the meeting.

It is in this context that a debate centered on the priorities of the actions to be undertaken for a change of governance at the local level that aims to reduce the distances between the center and the suburbs.
