Kosovo: a bridge between peoples

19/05/15

The agreement for the construction of a Bailey bridge near the monastery "Visoki Dečani" was signed yesterday morning at Camp Villaggio Italia by the Mayor of Deçan / Dečani, Rasim Selmanaj, and by the abbot Father Sava Janić.

The agreement strongly desired by the commander of KFOR, division general Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, solves operational problems, as it will allow the KFOR soldiers who protect the monastery to cross the river that runs along it safely, reducing intervention times. The Orthodox monastery of Deçan / Dečani, in fact, is the only place in Kosovo where KFOR is still the first security manager, which guarantees through the Multinational Battle Group West, an Italian-led multinational unit based on 5 Alpine regiments, commanded by the with the. Carlo Cavalli.

Italy has an important role in this project, the bridge will in fact be donated by the Italian Army, the first modules are already leaving today. The construction will be carried out by the engineers of the Kosovo Security Forces, trained in recent years by NATO but a specialized team of the 6th Pioneers Engineers Regiment of Rome will supervise the activity. The bridge, which will have a total length of 27 meters, will be finished by the month of July.

In addition to the operational implications, this work will facilitate the access of the entire population to the naturalistic area adjacent to the monastery, favoring its use and possible economic development. The agreement signed today is a further testimony of the close relationship that binds Italy and the Italian Army to the monastery of Deçan / Dečani but at the same time of the important role of KFOR in the normalization of relations between the Serbian religious community and citizenship of Deçan / Dečani, mostly ethnic Albanians.
