Iraq: training on the use of mortars in favor of the Zeravani military

The Italian trainers of the A&A (Advice and Assist) team have concluded a new training course in favor of Zeravani, a military unit belonging to the Kurdish security forces engaged in the front line in the fight against the daesh, on the use of mortars.

This course, at the end of an intense three-week cycle, formed 20 officers and non-commissioned officers Zeravani as section commanders and shooting observers, who can use the indirect shooting of mortars supplied to the Kurdish military to support the maneuver of the infantry units that will be used on the battlefield in future military operations.

In particular, the training focused on the use of the topographic map, on the methodology for calculating the firing data, on the observation of artillery fire and on the evaluation of the effects of fire on the designated targets. In addition, teaching was provided on notions of topography, movement on the ground, the use of radio procedures, first medical aid, the Counter - IED (Improvised Explosion Device) and the NBC (Nuclear, Bacteriological and Chemical) threat based on experiences gained directly from the battlefield.

The course ended with a final practical exercise to the presence of the commander of the Italian contingent and the commander of the base of the Zeravani, who witnessed the activation of a mortar section committed to carrying out the fire requests made by an observer team under the supervision of the advisors Italian.

Mortar training is part of a national training package coordinated with the Kurdistan Training Coordination Center which is added to the wider 9 ° training cycle which includes multiple activities, carried out in different training areas, such as training in procedures against improvised explosive devices, medical first aid, precision shooting techniques against the enemy activity of sniping, day and night infantry training in urban and open field contexts and training on the “Folgore” countercharging system.

The 9 training cycle, organized by the coalition instructors (Italy, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Finland, Norway and Great Britain), is still in progress and will end at the end of the first decade of next February, bringing to over 6000 Kurdish soldiers the total number of trained soldiers of which almost 3000 by the Italians.
