Iraq: 450 Italian soldiers to protect the Italian company that will restructure the Mosul dam

The assignment to an Italian company of the restoration works of the Mosul dam - without which the structure would risk collapsing, creating enormous humanitarian and environmental damage - is a recognition of Italian excellence for the industries in the sector. At the same time, it requires action, a safety framework to protect workers. Mosul is one of the most strategic areas for the region's balance, an essential source of funding for ISIS.

To explain the reasons for the new intervention in Iraqi territory, the Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti, host of the broadcast Agora on Rai Tre.

"The military will go to protect the work of other Italians who will have to restore a fundamental infrastructure for the future of Iraq "- he said explaining that the dam" has a significant structural problem on which we must intervene otherwise there is the risk of a humanitarian and environmental disaster".

To date, in the anti-Isis coalition, the Italian one is the second contingent among all the participating countries, second only to the United States: it is present in Baghdad and Erbil, with contingents also dedicated to the training of local police forces.

Interviewed by the journalist Gerardo Greco, the minister said that Italy - present in various international missions including Afghanistan, Lebanon, the Horn of Africa and Kosovo - and is providing important political and diplomatic work with regard to Syria.

Politics and diplomacy at work also for Libya. "Italy is ready to do what the situation requires," said the minister, naturally reiterating the need to first proclaim a legitimate government, recognized by all parties concerned, of national unity.
