Welcomed by the commander of the Regional Command West, Brigadier General Manlio Scopigno, General Breedlove met the soldiers of the units deployed in the theater and took part in an information meeting on ongoing activities in the area of Italian responsibility in which consolidation is taking place of the transition process which, by the end of the 2014, will see the assumption of responsibility for security by local authorities.
The high officer, accompanied by the commander of the Joint Force Command Brunssum, General Hans-Lothar Domröse, then attended a demonstration exercise in which the soldiers of the "Task Force Genie" (based on 5 ° Regiment genius guastatori) simulated a 'operation of identifying and deactivating improvised explosive devices by using several assets on the ground through which freedom of movement is guaranteed along the road routes.
Lastly, general appreciation was expressed by General Breedlove for the progress of the presidential elections of 5 last April in the area of Italian responsibility, during which a high percentage of Afghan citizens was able to freely express the choice of their candidate thanks to the framework of security provided by Afghan forces and the support of international forces of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
