Tomorrow the destroyer Andrea Doria of the Navy will return to the Mar Grande naval station in Taranto after a long period of activity to combat piracy in the Indian Ocean.

Doria ship departed from Taranto last July 22 and held for 192 days the role of flagship of the European mission Eunavfor Atalanta, to ensure the safety of maritime traffic in a strategic area for national interests.

The presence of the destroyer in the Indian Ocean, under the command of Admiral Guido Rando, in coordination with the other naval, Spanish, German and Dutch units did not allow any attack on the merchant ships in transit.

The crew of the ship, commanded by the navy captain Angelo Virdis, is composed of 192 military and integrated by the specialists of the underwater group, by the sailors of the Marina San Marco and by the staff of 1 ° and 3 ° Helicopters Group of La Spezia and Catania.

The support of the EH-101 helicopter is important, which, with its capabilities, has expanded its research operations and supported, in six missions, the assistance and health assistance activities in favor of merchant ships in difficulty.

In 233 days of activity, ship Andrea Doria has traveled 42.852 miles and carried out 4.150 hours of motion.
