Gen. Ruggiero, who came from an important post at the Army Chief of Staff in Rome, replaced Australian Major General David Mulhall.
The Italian military employed in Kabul belong to the four Armed Forces and mainly hold staff positions at the RS command, the NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan (NSOCC-A) and the Italian National Support Element (IT-NSE) with guarantee the functionality of the Mission command and support to Afghan Ministry of Education, Command and Training Schools located in the capital.
The RS Mission, which since January 1 has replaced the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission, focuses on training, advise and assistance to the Afghan Army and Security Forces, and is aimed at progressive improving their level of operation and autonomy.
