EUTM Somalia: The Italian contingent donates material to local women's basketball teams

The Civil and Military Cooperation Cell (CIMIC) of the Command in support of the European Mission EUTM Somalia and the National Contingent (Italian National Support Element IT-NSE), has organized and conducted a donation of sports equipment and technical clothing to the women's basketball teams in Mogadishu in order to support them in the development of this sport.

This activity, planned in support of the Department of Sport of the Banadir region and of the Municipality of Mogadishu, had as its objective the support of the development policies of the game of Basketball in Somalia, a sport once banned by the fundamentalists of Al-Shabab but today very popular among young Somali women because it offers them a gradual and effective process of social emancipation.

At the ceremony, which was also present the chairman of the sports department of the Banadir region and a large number of young players from the teams receiving the donation, the commander of IT-NSE, Lieutenant Colonel Pino Rossi, underlined the will of the Italian contingent to support the social policies and activities they as an aim the emancipation of young Somalis.

On this occasion the young players underlined how difficult it was for them to resume the sport and how much the Italian contingent supports with the described activities the most vulnerable sections of the Somali population. This support is achieved thanks to the contribution of the operators of the Multinational CIMIC Group, unit of the Army - multinational and with interforce value - specialized in civil-military cooperation.
