Horn of Africa: Fasan ship in anti-piracy activity with the South Korean Navy

The Italian frigate Virginio Fasan, the flag unit of the European air and naval forces currently deployed in the Horn of Africa to combat piracy, has been engaged in some activities with the destroyer in recent days Dae Jo Yeong of the South Korean Navy.         

The patrol also participated in the maneuvers Thunderbolt of the Spanish Navy which, together with a Spanish maritime patrol aircraft and a Serbian team of Autonomous Protection of the merchant ships, constitutes Task Force 465 - operation Atalanta placed under the command of Rear Admiral Fabio Gregori of the Italian Navy.

The Italian frigate and the destroyer Dae Jo Yeong they carried out various activities with increasing difficulty, with the involvement of all the operational structures and specialist teams of the units. In particular, on-board helicopters were used to gather information - Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) - against possible pirate base camps, checks are carried out on merchant ships with the friendly approach and boarding technique by the an embarked team made up of soldiers from the San Marco marine brigade and South Korean special forces, in addition, mutual aid procedures were simulated with medical evacuation and cinematic maneuvers in formation.

The activities at sea have proved to be an important moment of sharing and exchange of operational procedures in the fight against piracy and have represented an opportunity to increase and maintain a high degree of interoperability between the European forces of the operation Atalanta and the naval forces of other countries.

At the end of this important event, the Italian frigate continues its surveillance to combat the phenomenon of piracy and, more generally, in the activities of "Maritime Security" in the Horn of Africa.
