Central Africa: the engineers reclaim a channel to prevent malaria

16/09/14

The Italian engineers of the European Union mission in the Central African Republic EUFOR RCA have today completed the reclamation works of an important stretch of the hydraulic network of the capital Bangui, contributing to the prevention of malaria within densely populated neighborhoods.

Within a week, a specialized team of the 8 regiment of the Folgore paratroop brigade removed - by means of operating machines - over 1000 cubic meters of debris that obstructed the outflow of rainwater.

The work was carried out at the request of the local communities, following the heavy seasonal precipitation that causes considerable water stagnation, with consequent increase in the risk of contracting malaria, which in Central Africa is the main cause of mortality for children under 5 years (given UNICEF).

In the coming weeks, army engineers will carry out work to improve the security of the Central African airport.
