Central Africa: Alpine engineers repair a road and a clinic in Bangui

26/02/15

The alpine geniuses of the brigade "Julia" have completed two important projects started in the capital Bangui: the repair of a main road and the renovation of the external parts of a clinic in the city center.

For over a week a platoon of the 2 ° genius regiment of Trento with several operating machines has worked to improve the road surface of the axis leading to the Bridge of Unity, thus completing the project that brought together three districts divided by the conflict. The structure was built by the Italian military in collaboration with other European nations and inaugurated last month.

In parallel, the engineers of the "Julia" have contributed to the renovation of a clinic of the 5 ° district of Bangui, arranging the access roads, the roof and the fence of the health facility that serves one of the most populous districts of the city. The project was conducted in cooperation with the French and Finnish contingents of the European mission in Central Africa.

It is from last 5 August that Italy participates in the EUFOR RCA mission, launched to restore peace and security in the Central African Republic, which in the 2013 was the scene of a serious political crisis, resulting in a civil war that caused a total of thousands of victims and one million displaced persons, equal to one quarter of the population.

The EUFOR RCA mission - which will end the 15 March 2015 with the transfer of responsibility to UN Blue Helmets - is characterized by the multi-dimensional approach that envisages parallel interventions in the field of security and support for development, in synergy with International Organizations and the Delegation of the European Union, which is the first aid donor for the Central African Republic.
