Ship Euro, engaged in the anti-piracy operation Atalanta, has carried out the escort to the merchant ship in recent days Antaios, merchant ship used in the World Food Program (WFP - World Food Program) for the transport of humanitarian aid to the Somali population, from the port of Mombasa (Kenya) to that of Djibouti, for a stretch of 1.500 nautical miles in a sea area at risk of piracy attacks.

In the course of the ship escort Euro has carried out activities of market, Surveillance and Reconnaissance along the Somali east coast, in order to show the presence of the ships of the European anti-piracy device and to gather information on the state of the pirate camps.

These escort activities are among the objectives of the operation Atalanta, which began in December 2008, without which it would not have been possible to escort as many as 382 WFP merchant ships, for a total of 1.162 tons of foodstuffs delivered.

In an area as vast as that of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, the naval device of the operation Atalanta continues to be a fundamental tool of the European Union, capable of promptly and effectively guaranteeing the protection of merchant traffic, maritime safety and the fight against the phenomenon of piracy.
