General Ruggiero, formerly of the current position, was the commander of the Army Training and Application School in Turin.
The RS mission, which since 1 January 2015 has replaced the ISAF mission (International Security Assistance Force) - mission to which the Nation has participated continuously from the 2001 - is focused on training, advice and assistance in favor of the Armed Forces (Afghan National Security Forces - ANSF), Police Forces and Afghan Security Institutions (Afghan Security Institutions - ASI). The Resolute Support operating, therefore, at the highest levels of the hierarchical chain and command, is aimed at the progressive improvement of their operational capabilities and self-support.
In this context, the Italian military operate both within the Train Advise Assist Command - West (TAAC - W), based on Brigata Bersaglieri "Garibaldi", based in Herat, and in staff assignments at the RS Command in Kabul .
