Support activities continue to the population of Herat, the city of western Afghanistan, home of the command of the Train Advise Assist Command West on a "Taurinense" alpine brigade basis, through a series of donations made in the last week, culminating with the delivery of 10 motorcycles to the agriculture department.
With an informal ceremony held at the headquarters of the agriculture department - in the center of Herat, General Massimo Biagini, commander of TAAC West, delivered the last tranche of materials needed to implement the productivity of the primary sector of the province and improve agricultural crop control. The 10 motorcycles, entirely produced by local industries, will be very useful for getting around the cart tracks of the fields located in the rural areas around the city; previously, the Italian contingent had delivered additional materials requested by the departments concerned, including computers and IT supports, to ensure a better organization of management activities in the sector.
Before the handover, General Biagini wanted to meet in a short shura some farmers from the neighboring villages present in the department, to be able to personally present themselves and hear from their hands the impressions and problems that most cause concern, especially related to the long drought that is afflicting the western region for about 6 months.
The projects in the "Agriculture" sector aim at improving the working conditions and income of the weakest sections of the population, traditionally engaged in the agricultural sector, in order to increase the production of a sector of primary importance which represents 62% of the economy of the Province of Herat and constitutes the source of income for the less literate population groups and for women.
The Italian contingent, with 95 projects completed, has been supporting for more than a decade the initiatives of local authorities to develop an agricultural sector - in which about 260.000 employees are employed only in Herat and also to have an immediate impact on the redistribution of such as water and food.
"Being able to receive this aid from the Italian military is very important for us- said the elder in charge of the village of Sanow Gerd present at the department of agriculture - they will allow us to improve the organization of our fields and to resume work with less fear after this heavy summer without rain".
Support to the population, in compliance with the 2017 master plan created in collaboration with the specialists of the Multinational Cimic Group of the Army, in Motta di Livenza, is an activity that runs alongside the main training and assistance activity of the Afghan Security Forces, the primary focus of the Resolute Support mission.
