Afghanistan, Salma dam: Italian advisors supporting Afghan forces

An important activity of assistance to the personnel of the 207 ° corps of theAfghan National Army (ANA), which saw the protagonists of the men of Military Advisor Team (MAT). The unit is employed by the Train Advise Assist Command West (TAAC-W), the Italian-led inter-force and multinational contingent operating in the West of Afghanistan as part of the NATO “Resolute Support” (RS) mission.

A premise to everything, the inauguration of an important dam, built in Salma to the east of Herat, which will serve 560 villages and 260 thousand families. Present at the event were Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and India's Prime Minister Nerendra Modi.

Exceptional security measures taken for the occasion, which required the setting up of a command and control center at Camp Arena, the headquarters of the TAAC W, from where the Afghan military, flanked by the Italian MAT colleagues, constantly monitored each activity.

The advisors of the Italian team, alternating 24 hours a day during the two-day duration of the operation, ensured prompt and continuous assistance to the Afghan counterpart. The operation, called “Salma Dam”, also saw the use of information collection assets “Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance” (ISR) of the TAAC-W and the direct support of colleagues from the Air Force.

The excellent organization and the perfect efficiency of the security framework provided confirmed the significant progress made by the local security forces, committed to guaranteeing the security of Afghanistan and the capabilities of the Italian contingent currently led by the brigade Pinerolo.
