Afghanistan: closing ceremony of the EUPOL field office in Herat

This morning in Herat, in Camp Arena, in the presence of EUPOL head of mission ms. Pia Stjernvall, the closing ceremony of the field office of Herat was held, which, at the end of the last logistic requirements, will definitively cease the next 31 in May from the activities.

Among the many authorities present, also the Italian Ambassador, HE Luciano Pezzotti, the French Ambassador, HE Jean-Michela Marlaud, the UK Ambassador, HE Martin Longden, the Czech Republic's ambassador, SE Marketa Hajkova, the representative of the CSDP (European Security and Defense Policy), Dr Corrado Pampaloni, of the EUPOL Head of Mission Ms Pia Stjernvall, of the Governor of Herat sig. Mohammad Asif Rahimi, of the commander of TAAC West, gen. Michele Risi, of the consul general of the United States of America, mr. Martin Williams, and numerous Afghan generals and magistrates.

The field office of EUPOL, governed over the years almost always by an officer of the Carabinieri, has operated from the 2007 with a team of civil experts in the field of the rule of law, gender and human rights, military prosecutors and representatives of police for a total of 25 units of numerous nations of the European community. Within the Office there were also several Marshals of the Arma dei Carabinieri from the consolidated international experience that carried out the important training, mentoring and strategic advising activity of the highest officers of the Herat Police (in particular of the "PcoP" - Provincial chief of Police - commander of the Police of Herat, of the Criminal Investigation department, of several colonels responsible for the gender and human rights sectors and community policing).

Herat's field office has also carried out advising activities in relation to the Herat judiciary (in particular the Chief Prosecutor, judges of various degrees, civil and military, as well as the various prosecutors of the Herat Prosecutor's Office) allowing for improvement cooperation between the police and the judiciary.

Head of mission Pia Stjernvall, thanking the members of Herat's field office for the results achieved particularly in the community policing, said that Herat's field office was characterized by having "played an essential role in building the cooperation between police, public ministries, lawyers and the municipality as a whole, increasing the policies of the Afghan Government in the Herat area ", concluding that" the model set by the Carabinieri in Herat will be taken as an example for the restructuring of all the other Afghan provinces ".
