Afghanistan: police activities for the protection of children / students

The staff of the EUPOL Carabinieri on Wednesday morning 11 March completed one of the many aid projects for the Afghan population with the primary task of contributing to improving the interaction between the population and the population. local police.

During an accurate analysis of the road accidents that have occurred in recent years, the Department of Education found that during the school year, especially in the province of Herat, numerous students were hit along the way from home to school. Some of these have unfortunately been fatal for the children involved.

To reduce pedestrian investments and in particular mortal ones where children / students were involved, EUPOL with the Police-e Mardume Unit (Proximity Police) prepared a program focused on pedestrian safety training for some children, in particular students belonging to the Scout group of public schools in Herat.

The program aims to raise awareness among the students who will be coordinated by the Police-e mardume Unit, in close collaboration with the Department of Education and the local Traffic Police.

During the ceremony that took place at the EUPOL compound in Camp Arena, the Police-e Mardume, received in donation 400 “STOP” signposts, and 800 reflective vests, as part of the aforementioned project. The program also provides for the training of students who will be duly identified and who will take responsibility for ensuring the safety of their companions during pedestrian crossings near the schools.

The donation was made by EUPOL to Colonel Noor Khan Nikzad, head of the Police-e Mardume of Herat, with financial support from the GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) in the presence of the provincial commander of the General Police Adullah Majid Roozi and other local authorities, as well as international organizations, including UNAMA and CESVI.

The provincial police commander of Herat MG Roozi intervened stating that: "The principles of Community Policing are fundamental for the success of the Afghan police: the police approach to the community and the cooperation with the community should be understood and implemented by every policeman, at all levels, he added that the police are not able to overcome all the problems and challenges, if not seeking the help of the community itself. "

Colonel Nikzad, head of the Police-e Mardume Unit, illustrated the results obtained recently thanks to the contribution of EUPOL and, in particular, the establishment of eight listening points made up of police officers also involved in receiving complaints, profits. to improve relationships with people. In addition to this, a facebook profile of Herat City Community Policing was also created to gather people's opinions and suggestions, several meetings were organized with schools and advisory councils (shura) in the city of Herat to further improve cooperation with the community.
