On the morning of Friday 2 September, 2016, the commemoration ceremony was held for the victims of the demolition of the AM G222 "LYRA34" aircraft, the 3 September 1992 occurred on the summit of Mount Zec, in the municipality of Fojnica, canton of Sarajevo (Bosnia Herzegovina).
The aircraft was transporting humanitarian aid from Zagreb to Sarajevo on behalf of the UN, in favor of the local populations under siege, flying over an apparently safe area, when it was hit by 2 ground-air missiles.
The Italian contingent located in Sarajevo, consisting of 2 officers and 2 non-commissioned officers assigned to the EUFOR ALTHEA mission and a lieutenant colonel assigned to NATO, organized the ceremony at the marble monument built a short distance from the crash site, on Mount Zec, at a height of about 1700 meters, 40 km west of the Bosnian capital.
The inscription, engraved in granite, reads:
"In memory of Marco Betti, Marco Rigliaco, Giuseppe Buttaglieri and Giuliano Velardi, Gold Medals for Military Valor, fallen because others live - Cieli BiH, 3 settembre 1992"
and continuing, transcribed also in the Serbian-Croatian language:
"... The 46ma Air Brigade, in the wake of a heroic tradition of war and peace, consecrated by the sacrifice of the fallen crews in the fulfillment of duty, has written pages of stories that constitute the glorious patrimony of military virtues that have given luster and prestige to the Aeronautica Militare and to Italy".
The commemoration was attended by the ambassador of Italy in Sarajevo dr. Ruggiero Corrias, who laid a crown, and the apostolic nuncio HE Msgr. Luigi Pezzuto, who gave a ritual speech and guided those present in a prayer. A representation of the EUFOR and NATO commands also took part.
