The Navy organizes the marine anti-pollution exercise in Cagliari on 6 and 7 July Caralis 2016, the most important annual complex training to test one's anti-pollution capabilities.

The exercise is part of the training activities carried out by the Navy to ensure the readiness and maintenance of the ability of naval units to carry out operations to combat marine pollution by hydrocarbons or other agents, to protect marine fauna and flora. These environmental protection capabilities enhance the versatility of the ships, which have always been committed to contributing in the fields of public utility and environmental protection.

The exercise Caralis 2016 it will begin on 6 July with the seminar "Contrast to pollution and protection of the marine environment", now in its ninth edition, which will be held in the A. Boscolo auditorium of the University of Cagliari. It will be attended by technicians specialized in marine anti-pollution and qualified representatives of the academic world. The seminar serves to gather insights, experiences and updates, fostering inter-ministerial and inter-agency cooperation, involving the academic world and specialists in the field of sea protection and environmental defense, offering a moment of sharing the mutual knowledge of the participants, including among others, the Port Authority, the Civil Protection, the Fire Brigade, the Institute for the Coastal Marine Environment (IAMC) -CNR of Oristano, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research ( ISPRA), the Regional Agency for the Prevention and Protection of the Environment (ARPA), and the University of Cagliari.

On 7 July, off the coast of Cagliari, the sea phase of the Caralis 2016, with the ships of the Navy that will face, in a fictitious scenario, a spill of hydrocarbons into the sea, which will be simulated to have escaped from a merchant ship following an accident. Upon the alarm, the Port Authority of Cagliari, having carried out an inspection with a patrol boat at the site of the simulated accident, will ascertain the spill and then activate the operations room, which will trigger the local anti-pollution emergency plan, as a result of which the patrol boats Sirio, Orione e Vega they will work to contain and therefore remove the polluting substances from the sea, in coordination with the local media of the Castalia Consortium which operate to safeguard the sea for the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea on a national scale.

Simultaneously with the activities at sea, the prefecture of Cagliari will activate its operations room, simulating to prepare itself to combat the possible beaching on the coast of part of the pollutants.

These activities serve to improve cooperation, coordination and procedures to combat spills at sea, pushing realism to the maximum.

With a view to environmental protection typical of the Caralis 2016 exercise, in compliance with the "Green Fleet" project for increasingly eco-efficient military ships, the Navy ships will use biofuels from sustainable sources during the exercise, thus reducing their use of petroleum derivatives and polluting emissions.

exercise Caralis participating ship Orione, Sirio e Vega, the Patrol Forces Command. The 6 offshore patrol boats of the First Patrol Squadron which have equipment to combat marine oil pollution. In particular, these patrol boats are equipped with floating pneumatic barriers for the containment of pollutants on the surface, a skimmer for the removal and recovery of oily substances from the surface of the water, crates for the accumulation on board of the recovered pollutants, systems for spreading dispersing agents on the polluted area and finally a chemical laboratory for the analysis of pollutants.
