Celebrated the birthday of the oldest "gray" ship in the MM

22/06/15

Last Friday Stromboli ship, commanded by frigate captain Beniamino Scorcelletti and moored at the Naval Station Mar Grande of Taranto, officially celebrated the 40th anniversary of the 20 last February.

The ceremony, in the presence also based on the "sister" Vesuvio supplier, was chaired by the commander of the second Naval Group, rear admiral Andrea Gueglio, and saw the presence of owners of the naval Command present at the headquarters and some of the former commanders of the 'unit.

The career of the Stromboli team supplier, studded with more than 1.200 supplies at sea in favor of national naval units and NATO, 43.500 hours of motion for a total of over 414.000 miles and 19 real operations carried out, began with a rescue operation humanitarian (the rescue operation for refugees in Vietnam) and has continued over time to date, with an important commitment to the peoples (Operation Somalia and humanitarian operation Mare Nostrum).

In this sense, the "old lady" fully embodies the role that the Navy has always been committed to: an armed force serving the country, serving the international community and its challenges, and serving the populations, in full adherence to the concept of dual-use that today, more than ever, characterizes it.

"Underlining the value of this ship", added the commander Scorcelletti, "of the iron that surrounds it, of the systems that arm it from 40 years and of the activities it has carried out, is therefore a duty today. crews who over the years have represented their true soul, true leaders and protagonists of the successes collected by Stromboli. "

Admiral Gueglio, in "sharing the affectionate and sincere greeting" of the commander in Chief of the Naval Squadron, admiral of the team Filippo Maria Foffi, has expressed both the emotion in remembering the day when as a child he witnessed from the beach of his country in Liguria at the launch of the unit, both the honor to attend the "prestigious birthday of the oldest gray navy vessel".

The ceremony, as usual, culminated with the blessing of the unit and the crew by the military ship chaplain Cavour, Don Filippo Ferlita, and with the reading of the Sailor's Prayer.
