The new project is inspired by the Mikoyan 1.44 (NATO code name "Flatpack"). What will prove to be a technological demonstrator was initially conceived as an alternative to the US Advanced Tactical Fighter which resulted in the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor.

The plane with impure delta wings, equipped with advanced avionics, low observability technology, super-cruise and moving nozzles was designed according to western standards.

Its shape vaguely resembles the EFA 2000. It carried out only three flights: the first in 2000, the other two in the following year. The project was canceled right in the 2001 due to the alleged final price for each fighter, estimated at 70 million dollars (the final price of the Pak-Fa is 100 million).

We are using the experience gained with the 'Project 1.44' for the new fighter - says Sergei Korotkov, CEO of MiG at Rossiyskaya Gazeta. The new platform will also exploit the know-how acquired with the MiG-35 (NATO code name "Fulcrum-F"), a multi-role fighter for air superiority.

The new MiG will replace the much-loved MiG-29, introduced in 1983 and still in production today.
