ISIS launches a new channel for propaganda in the Russian language

The Islamic State is intensifying its propaganda efforts in the Russian language, a sign that it is growing stronger in the former Soviet countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently stated that 2.000 Russian citizens are fighting in Syria or Iraq.

In June, the head of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, said there was "no chance" to stem the tide of fighters.

The Furat Media channel

Through the new media weapon, a militant group declared the establishment of a new province of the Caliphate in the northern Caucasus, within the Russian Federation itself.

Among the dozens of professionally produced videos under the title of Union of Mujahideen of the Caucasus, there are interviews with Russian-speaking militants in Iraq and Syria.

The previous publications in Russian language were fragmented and most of the videos were derived from dubbed or subtitled Arabic originals, many of which were produced outside the Caliphate territory.

For about a month Furat has been publishing subtitled videos of ISIS militants, DVDs, and propaganda in Russian from inside Syria and Iraq.

Despite the crackdowns against Twitter and Facebook's pro-ISIS accounts, the number of publications and sharing of jihadist material is vast. The Bookings Institute has estimated more than 46.000 the supporting accounts of the Islamic State at the end of 2014.

Furat has so far resisted official censorship. A Facebook account was blocked but, after a little over a week, a new one already had almost 250 members.
