Kurdistan: Admiral Binelli Mantelli meets with President Barzani

Yesterday afternoon we had a lightning visit to Erbil, in Kurdistan, by the Chief of Defense, Admiral Luigi Binelli Mantelli for a confrontation with his Iraqi counterpart General Babaki Zebari. During the visit he met the president of the Kurdistan region of Iraq Masoud Barzani and the highest offices of the local government.

The head of the SMD, accompanied by the high representative of the Kurdistan regional government of Iraq in Italy, Dr. Rezan Kader, was greeted on arrival by the Peshmerga Minister of Affairs, Mustafa Sayid Qadir and the Italian ambassador in Iraq Massimo Marotti.

President Barzani thanked the head of the SMD for the support Italy has provided and is providing to the Kurdish authorities in its war against ISIS, reiterating the need for further support from the international community in terms of weapons materials and training.

Admiral Binelli confirmed Italy's commitment in favor of the Iraqi army and Kurdistan in contrasting ISIS both in the context of bilateral collaboration and of the international coalition. In particular, as regards bilateral activity, the possibility of carrying out further training activities in Italy in favor of peshmergas in the field of countering the IED (improvised explosive devices), which is causing serious losses among the military and civilians, was evaluated. Subsequently, Admiral Binelli completed talks with local top authorities and met with Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, Interior Minister Abdulkarim Sultan Sinjari and Foreign Department Head Falah Mustafa Bakir.

The brief visit took place in a climate of great cordiality and sharing of views as proof of the will to fight together the terrorist threat posed by ISIS and the recognition of the Kurdish authorities and the Kurdish people for Italian support.
