ISIS: 87 Italians fight for the Islamic State, 10 have returned home

The number of foreign fighters in Iraq and Syria has more than doubled in a year, according to a new study by the company Soufan Group, specializing in intelligence services.

Among the 27 and the 31 thousand people, from at least 86 countries, have reached Syria and Iraq to marry the cause of the Islamic State. There are five thousand foreign fighters from Western Europe: 3.700 come from just four countries: France, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom.

The Italians who went to Syria or Iraq to fight with the Islamic State, the data is updated in November 2015, they are officially 87. Finally, ten Italians would return home after fighting under the banner of the caliphate.

Comparing the data of last year, when a foreign fighting force of 12 thousand was presumed, the increase is evident. The number of those joining ISIS from Russia and Central Asia has increased by 300% compared to the 2014.

The researchers also analyzed the districts with the highest concentration of foreign fighters, the so-called "recruitment outbreaks". The Molenbeek borough of Brussels is considered one of the highest jihadist recruitment centers in Europe.
