New Delhi's first nuclear-powered ballistic submarine has passed all sea trials and is ready to be officially added to the Indian Navy's arsenal. This is what the Indian government confirms.

After nearly two years of testing - confirm from the Navy - the submarine is ready to enter service at any time.

The leader of the new class Arihant, has a displacement of six thousand tons and is equipped with twelve two-stage K-15 “Sagarika” missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of 750 km or, alternatively, four K-4 systems capable of achieving objectives at 3500 km.

Unlike the American boomers, the class Arihant will also perform tasks hunter killer against enemy submarines and surface boats. It is powered by an eighty megawatt pressurized water reactor and can reach a diving speed of twenty-four knots. 112 meters long, it is capable of reaching a depth of 300 meters (test).

With a “similar” design to the class Akula Russian (Project 971 Shchuka-B), theArihant is the first of five nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines that India is building at the Visakhapatnam shipyards. The leader of the class cost 2.9 billion dollars (research and development costs).

Finally, India continues to design a new class of nuclear-powered attack submarines, always based on Akula. The Russians have leased the K-152 to the Indians for ten years Chakra (photo on the right), Project 971 Shchuka-B, with the option for a second submarine.
