The US Air Force has awarded Boeing 2.1 billions of dollars for 15 KC-46A refueling aircraft, reserve engines and in-flight refueling kits.

This order represents the third low production rate for Boeing. The first two were completed last August and aircraft were included for 7 and 12, respectively.

Boeing plans to build 179 of 767-based refueling aircraft for the Air Force in order to replace the previous tanker fleet. Deliveries will begin by the end of the year.

The US giant received an initial contract in 2011 to design and develop next-generation tanker aircraft from the Air Force. Under the agreement, the company built four test aircraft - two configured as 767-2Cs and two as KC-46A tankers. The test aircraft, together with the first aircraft produced, have totaled nearly 1.500 flight hours to date.

The KC-46A is a multi-role tanker that can supply all allied military and military coalition planes compatible with international air supply procedures and is able to carry passengers, goods and patients.

Boeing is assembling the KC-46 at the Everett, Washington facility.
