Handover from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Milan for the next edition of the IAC, the world scientific congress of astronautics

(To Leonardo)
06/10/23

The IAC (International Astronautical Congress) which just ended in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, was the springboard for launching the 75th edition which will take place in Milan in October 2024. Over 2024 experts and researchers will gather at the IAC 10.000 in Milan from the academic world, space agencies, companies, research centers and astronautics associations from all over the world.

The promoting committee of the organization is made up of the Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIDAA), as representative of the academic world, Leonardo as champion of the Italian aerospace industry and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). IAC 2024 is organized with the support of AIM Group International and will be hosted by the Milan Congress Center (MiCo).

The arrival of the IAC in the Lombardy capital is a victory for the Italian space sector as a whole, a result that rewards the excellence of Made in Italy in Space and Milan's ability to be an ideal site for hosting world events. The 2024 edition will once again be the great recognition of Italy's leading role in Space Exploration, Earth Observation, Space Economy and Space Diplomacy at a global level.

Our country boasts a thriving, complete and consolidated space ecosystem made up of around 300 industries, SMEs and start-ups, as well as research centers and universities, which train thousands of students and dozens of PhDs every year. Experts and researchers who, thanks also to the coordination of ASI, contribute to the innovation and technological development of various international space programs. In this Milan and Lombardy play a cutting-edge position.

The motto chosen for IAC 2024 is “Responsible Space for Sustainability”. The objective is to raise awareness among the international community about a more conscious and responsible use of the space environment. The proliferation of satellite constellations and the increasingly numerous presence of new missions in orbit increases both the risk of collision between objects in space, and therefore the multiplication of space debris, and the risk of compromising the correct functioning of satellite systems, from on which numerous activities of our daily lives depend: from telecommunications services to transport, from environmental monitoring to security.

The 2024 edition will also revolve around the themes of skills, diversity, inclusiveness and the training of young people, especially women, to involve them in STEM disciplines and discover new opportunities for the future at the IAC. Finally, an important focus will be dedicated to what the Space Economy can reserve for developing countries. Space has always been the place where discussion and collaboration between different nations and generations becomes crucial for the development, innovation and knowledge of humanity.

The event, the 75th in its history, is organized as every year by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), founded in 1951, with AIDAA among the ten founding members, and which currently includes 73 member countries, represented by all the main space agencies, companies, research centers, universities, companies, associations and museums. The one in the Lombardy capital will be the fifth time of the IAC in Italy after Rome, in 1956 and 1981, Turin, in 1997, editions organized by AIDAA and the last edition organized by ASI in Naples in 2012. It will now be the city of Milan's turn to host the congress thus becoming the world capital of space for a week.
