Lockheed Martin: "Athena", the "anti martyrdom" laser tested

04/03/15

Lockheed Martin successfully disabled the engine of a small truck via a laser beam during a field test. The thirty kilowatt weapon system has demonstrated extreme precision and the ability to protect military forces and critical infrastructures.

"Athena", this is the name of the prototype, burned the engine manifold in a matter of seconds over a mile away (1,6 km).

Fiber optic lasers are revolutionizing direct energy systems - explain Lockheed Martin - we are investing in every component to reduce weight and increase power.

This test represents the first step in providing light and robust laser weapon systems for military aircraft, helicopters, ships and vehicles. Through a technique called "spectral beam", multiple fiber optic laser modules form a single, powerful, high quality beam that provides greater efficiency and lethality than other existing prototypes.

Athena is part of the ADAM laser weapon project, Area Defense Anti-Munitions, developed by Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale, California and which has already proven its effectiveness against small airborne and surface targets.

ADAM incorporates the 30 kilowatt ALADIN laser, Accelerated Laser Demonstration Initiative, developed by the company in Bothell, Washington.
