The first of eight Super Lynx Mk21B helicopters of the Brazilian Navy undergoing a modernization program made its maiden flight yesterday at the Leonardo plant in Yeovil, in the south east of England. The changes introduced on the Brazilian Lynx will allow the customer to obtain greater capacity, better performance and greater operational effectiveness.

The Super Lynx Mk21B are equipped with two new generation CTS800-4N engines, already used on the Super Lynx 300 and AW159 helicopters, which ensure a significant increase in performance, especially in hot environments, increasing the payload and the effectiveness of the mission . The changes also include new digital and avionics instrumentation with new tactical and satellite navigation systems, a modern anti-collision system, identification systems, radar alarm receivers and electronic surveillance systems integrated with countermeasures and self-protection systems, ability to employ infrared viewers and a new electric powered recovery winch for rescue tasks.

The inaugural flight of the first helicopter as part of its modernization program further strengthens the long-standing partnership between Leonardo and the Brazilian Navy that has been using Lynx since 1978.
