Transport of medical supplies with drones. This is the object of the experiment, just successfully concluded, designed and built by Leonardo, Telespazio (joint venture between Leonardo 67% and Thales 33%) and Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, in collaboration with ENAC (National Civil Aviation Authority).

This is one of the first demonstrations in Italy of delivery of biological samples and biomedical products, on routes not easily accessible by ordinary roads, with the aid of vertical take-off drones equipped with electric propulsion and therefore with a very low ecological and acoustic impact.

Rehearsals took place between 19 and 22 October. The drone transported medical material flying near Rome between two sites of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital more than 32 km away: from the S. Marinella collection center to the Palidoro analysis center and vice versa, using an automatic control mode beyond the field of view of the operator (BVLOS - Beyond Visual Line of Sight).

The experimentation involved the use of Telespazio's cloud-based T-DROMES digital platform, which allows the provision of end-to-end services: from planning to carrying out the mission of a drone, up to the processing of data acquired by the edge.

“We are satisfied with this goal, achieved thanks to partners of excellence such as the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital and Telespazio and with the collaboration of ENAC. The project is part of Leonardo's path of innovation and experimentation in Advanced Air Delivery, of which another fundamental element is the D-FLIGHT platform for drone air traffic management, built with ENAV ", commented Laurent Sissmann, SVP Unmanned Systems by Leonardo. “Leonardo is committed to supporting and protecting people and communities, contributing to their sustainable growth, thanks to its leadership in new generation technologies. Collaboration with governments, individuals and other industries aimed at offering the best security capabilities is one of the foundations of our 'Be Tomorrow - Leonardo 2030' Strategic Plan and investment in autonomous systems is in line with our growth strategies. In particular, with the skills we are maturing in this field, we want to support the country in gaining a leading position in the development of operations and services with remotely piloted aircraft systems ".

Scientific Character (IRCCS) while in 2006 it obtained the first accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), the institute that in the world certifies the excellence in the reception and in the quality of the care offered. In 2014, the new research laboratories were inaugurated, with a Pharmaceutical Workshop (Cell Factory) entirely dedicated to the large-scale production of advanced therapies. The Bambino Gesù is today the largest pediatric hospital and research center in Europe, with over 3.500 professionals. Healthcare is divided into 5 hospitalization and care poles: the historic site of the Gianicolo and the site of San Paolo Fuori le Mura, in Rome, next to which the Viale Baldelli site was inaugurated at the end of 2019; the offices of Palidoro and Santa Marinella, on the Lazio coast.
