Leonardo at Korean salon ADEX 2017: focus on industrial collaboration, helicopters and electronics for defense

(To Leonardo)
16/10/17

Leonardo returns to the International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition in Seoul (South Korea) - ADEX - from the 17 to the October 22 with its own dedicated exhibition area (stand B82 Hall B). Today there are several military and civilian operators in the country who possess some of Leonardo's most advanced technologies. The company has several decades of collaboration in the helicopter field and in the defense electronics sector, in particular for radar systems, and has more recently supplied the AW159 helicopters currently used by the South Korean Navy.

At ADEX, in addition to the AW159, Leonardo's abilities in offering integrated solutions to the state of the art are also illustrated. The Navy AW159 are in fact equipped with electronic scanning radar (AESA - Active Electronically Scanned Array) Seaspray and with a HIDAS self-protection system (Helicopter Integrated Defensive Aids Suite), both made by Leonardo and also used on the AW159 Wildcat of the British Navy. To these systems is added the electronic countermeasure SAGE, which includes a radar alarm receiver, also on display at ADEX.

Leonardo is ready to offer not only modern products but also the related support services and a broader collaboration in the country. An example is the transfer to Marina, Aeronautica Militare and the Agency for the Development of Defense Defense in the field of electronic countermeasures to adapt the relative systems provided for the AW159 to emerging threats. After an initial training phase in the UK, these skills were transferred to Korea.

In addition to ADEX Leonardo promotes AW101 and AW189 helicopters. The AW101, used by various countries such as Italy, the United Kingdom and Canada, was recently acquired for search and rescue tasks also from Norway, where it was equipped with another AESA radar produced by Leonardo, the Osprey. Demining, amphibious support and VVIP transport are some of the missions that the AW101 can carry out. The AW189 is a modern civilian helicopter with orders in the world for over 150 units. In the past, Leonardo has already supplied South Korea with Super Lynx helicopters for the Navy, AW139 for the Coast Guard and firefighters, AW119 for the Police and GrandNew and AW169 for helicopter rescue tasks.

In the electronic scanning radar sector, Leonardo has a global leadership position with orders for its sensors in different countries. The Osprey, for example, was chosen in the USA for the MQ-30C Fire Scout remote-controlled helicopter. The technology adopted for the Seaspreay and Osprey systems allows the identification of periscopes of submarines and other small targets, even in the presence of very rough seas. The Super Lynx helicopters of the Navy and S-8 of the Coast Guard are also equipped with Seaspray radars, which can also benefit from the support services offered by Leonardo.

During the Salone Leonardo will also illustrate his solution to meet the national requirement for a modern friend-enemy identification system (IFF - Identification Friend Foe) Mode-5. The country's goal is to achieve this capacity within the 2020 to ensure maximum interoperability with the US and NATO Armed Forces. Leonardo, in partnership with Hensoldt ('Team Skytale'), is offering this solution, able to meet the most modern standards in the field of cryptography, to different potential customers in the world. This is the only alternative system to those in the United States.

In particular, the M428 IFF transponder will be exposed to ADEX. Finally, other auto-protection equipment is on show at the Show: the BriteCloud anti-missile system, the SEER radar alarm system and the Miysis, electronic measurement against threats with an infrared guidance system.
