(To Fincantieri)
10/04/17

In the presence of the Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti, the launching ceremony of the bow section of the LSS logistic support unit took place today at the Castellammare di Stabia plant (Logistic Support Ship) "Vulcano", a unit commissioned to Fincantieri as part of the renewal plan for the Navy fleet.

Mrs Maria Teresa Piras, widow of Lieutenant Emilio Attramini, a young Navy Officer, died in Mount Serra's aerial tragedy in 1977.

The ceremony was attended by, among others, the Undersecretary of State for Defense, Gioacchino Alfano, the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Valter Girardelli, the mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, Antonio Pannullo and the President of Fincantieri, Ambassador Giampiero Massolo.

The section launched today, 94 meters long, 24 meters wide, 16.3 meters high and weighing approximately 4.100 tons, will be transported by sea to the Muggiano (La Spezia) plant, where it will be assembled together with the stern section to make up the entire units, due for delivery in 2019.

The multi-year program for the renewal of the Navy fleet involves the construction, in addition to the LSS, of a transport and landing unit (LHD, or Landing Helicopter Dock), also planned for this site, with the start of works in the summer of this year and launch in the summer of the 2019, as well as seven Multi-purpose Offshore Patrol Boats (PPA), with an additional three as an option.

The fundamental characteristic common to all three classes of ships is their very high level of innovation which makes them extremely flexible in different usage profiles with a high degree of efficiency. In particular, these units have a double profile of use (the so-called dual use), the typically military one and that in favor of the community (such as for civil protection operations); in addition, they have a low environmental impact, through advanced auxiliary propulsion systems with low polluting emissions (electric motors).

The Vulcan Ship will be certified by the RINA (Italian Naval Register) in accordance with international conventions on pollution prevention for both the most traditional aspects such as those covered by the Marpol Convention and those not yet binding, such as the Hong Kong Convention Kong dedicated to demolishing ships.
