Fincantieri: work begins in Palermo for the LPD amphibious unit for Qatar

The setting up of the amphibious unit (LPD - Landing Platform Dock) commissioned from Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defense as part of the national naval acquisition program.

Brig. Ahmad Al Hammadi, Qatari Emiri Naval Forces Head of Project Control Office-Italy, and, for Fincantieri, Marcello Giordano and Umberto Aloi, respectively director of the Palermo plant and head of Export Programs.

The LPD unit is designed in accordance with the RINAMIL regulation (regulation for the classification of military ships) to ensure extremely efficient land-air-sea connections. It will be highly flexible and capable of performing different types of tasks, from humanitarian interventions to military support and ground operations.

The ship will have a length of about 143 meters, a width of 21,5 and will be able to accommodate about 550 people on board. She will be equipped with two vehicle ramps and a floodable internal dock capable of accommodating a ready-to-use LCM (Landing Craft Mechanized) landing craft that can also be placed on the garage deck and deployed using a crane system. The flight deck is also sized to accommodate the NH90 helicopter.
