Fincantieri handles the last two OPVs to Bangladesh Coast Guard

As part of the contract for the supply of four patrol vessels, Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV), to the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG), derived from the modernization and conversion of the "Minerva" class corvettes decommissioned by the Italian Navy, Fincantieri delivered today the last two units at the Muggiano shipyard (La Spezia).

These are the ships "Urania" and "Danaide", renamed "KARAMUZZAMAN" and "MANSOOR ALI", which had been disbanded by the national fleet in March 2016 and arrived shortly afterwards in the Fincantieri basin of Genoa, where the conversion works started , completed at the Integrated Shipyard of Muggiano.

The ceremony was attended by Mr Mostafa Kamal Uddin, high authority at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Admiral AMMM Aurangzeb Chowdhury, commanding general of the Coast Guard of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. For Fincantieri the deputy director of the division was present Fincantieri Services Paolo Frino.

Together with "Minerva" and "Sibilla", renamed "SYED NAZRUL" and "TAJUDDIN" and delivered in August 2016, these units will form the backbone of the Bangladesh Coast Guard fleet, with an extension of the operational life of more than twenty ' years.

The units will be used for patrol purposes for the control of the traffic of the Exclusive Economic Zone and maritime boundaries, with the ability to contain environmental pollution and to recover and assist civilian populations in the event of humanitarian emergencies.

This contract has therefore confirmed the ability of Fincantieri to propose, unique among the naval unit suppliers, tailored solutions for each Marina and Coast Guard, according to their needs and characteristics, using new projects from time to time or alternatively, thanks to the precious support of the Italian Navy, second-hand units subjected to a rigorous and careful process of refit.
