Fincantieri will modernize P61, an offshore patrol of the Armed Forces of Malta

Fincantieri, one of the largest naval engineering groups and number one in the world for diversification and innovation, has been awarded a contract with the Armed Forces of Malta, for the modernization of P61, an offshore patrol vessel built over 10 years ago by Fincantieri.

The contract was signed by Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi, Head of the Maltese Armed Forces and Gian Battista Corbetta, Head of the Maintenance, Refitting Overhaul & Conversion of the Naval Services Business Unit of Fincantieri.

The modernization interventions, which provide for the overall maintenance of many of the on-board systems, are aimed at considerably improving the reactive capacity of the unit. The works, worth around 7 million euros, will start in the second quarter of 2017 in Italy, at the Fincantieri plant in Muggiano (La Spezia) and will last around 6 months.

With a length of over 53 meters, the P61 patrol boat was built and delivered by the Fincantieri plant of Muggiano to the Armed Forces of Malta in the 2005 and derives from the evolution of the project of the Diciotti patrol class, units built by Fincantieri for the Coast Guard Italian. At the end of the works the ship will be modernized and with a considerable extension of the operational life.
